Krakowskie Przedmieście
The Library was founded in 1817. At the beginning, it was located in Kazimierzowski Palace. In 1894, it was transferred in a new building raised in Neo-Renaissance style to the design by A.Jabłoński-Jasieńczyk and S.Szyller. The collections were often evacuated and plundered. After the defeat of the November Uprising, about 90.000 books were transferred to Petersburg. In 1915, the tsarist authorities shipped the most valuable collections, the inventories and the files of the Library. In 1939, the German occupants plundered the Cabinet of Engravings. In 1944, they burnt approximately 4.000 manuscripts. During the nazi occupation, the University Library lent books to two clandestine universities (of Warsaw and of Poznań). In 1999, the collections, counting more than 2 million volumes (in all the UL network, more than 4 million), were transferred into a new building in the district of Powiśle.
