The programme of the celebrations of the 100th anniversary of the regaining of independence by Poland includes several hundred events which will take place in 2018 in various parts of the city, with numerous references to the local history of the struggle for independence.

The hundredth anniversary of independence will be celebrated by Warsaw with a slogan “The capital of freedom 1918-2018 and a logotype “Your Warsaw”. A hundred years ago Warsaw regained the status of the capital city of the Polish State. This is when Poles acquired democratic freedoms and adopted modern social solutions such as the public insurance system, the freedom of the press and the freedom of association. This has become the basis for the development of culture and science in Warsaw and the foundation for the modern metropolis. The free, open and tolerant Warsaw is a city belonging to its residents, which is why the focus of the celebrations is to include all the Varsovians in the anniversary events and to invite them to celebrate freedom together.

“The regaining of independence was one of the major factors in Warsaw's development in the 20th century,” said Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz, Mayor of Warsaw. “Having reclaimed the status of the capital city, Warsaw became the real heart of Poland, the leading economic, academic and cultural centre. After 1918 it became a European metropolis with thriving cultural and academic life and modern urban planning and architectural solutions. During the celebrations we would like to recall these achievements.”
Warsaw has prepared a number of projects to celebrate the anniversary. At the moment, these include 420 events at the city or district level, but the list is not final.
