250 nest boxes for swifts and sparrows to be placed in the Śródmieście district. Warsaw's birds have an important role to perform - they feed on mosquitoes and pests destroying the greenery. With these winged animals in mind, the residents learn how to take care of their habitats and protect them from extinction.

Environmental protection is vital for the condition of the City. While renovating the Warsaw's buildings, we must take into consideration the natural life cycle of birds. They often live in cracks behind downpipes, under window sills or roofs. Not everyone is aware of the fact that birds help us fight insects. We can also help them by feeding them in the winter, or taking care of their nests,” said Michał Olszewski, Deputy Mayor of Warsaw.

New nest boxes for birds are being placed as part of this year’s participatory budgeting project entitled “Protecting swifts and sparrows in Śródmieście - nest boxes.” White, pine wood boxes will be hung on 27 buildings in the centre of Warsaw. The specific locations were selected by specialists on the basis of ornithological studies. The mounting is due to start in a few days. A total of 250 nest boxes will be placed by mid-December.

The birds, by feeding on insects, protect people from mosquitoes, midges, and pests. One swift is able to catch about 20,000 flying insects a day, and approximately 2.5 million during the entire breeding season. Swifts represent one of the most important city bird species. We can observe them near their nests in buildings, and watch them feeding high up in the sky. They are often mistaken with swallows.

Birds and bats are protected in Warsaw. Renovations of buildings are a threat to them as their habitats are being destroyed. The appropriate nest boxes will provide birds with shelter, and help numerous species survive.
